Review of 2010 (1984) by Donegal H — 04 Aug 2008
This is the Sci-fi movie for people who left 2001 scratching their heads. Nearly everything that happened in 2001 is explained in detail in this film, as well as an omniscious narration (by Sheider) explaining the plot of of this movie if you aren't getting it.
This is a more accessible movie than 2001, but all the exposition, dated cold war politics and cheezy SFX make it less than great. The exterior space scenes are fine, but everything on earth or indoors is pretty hokey.
Anyone who had a PC in 1984 will recognize some Commodore 64 graphics happening. I understand in the books, Clarke actually portrays less antagonism between the US and the USSR, with them actually wanting to work together (like the space station today and other projects) and China was the real antagonist from Earth.
China is not in the film version at all. Still, sci-fi fans should check this out. It might make some people appreciate 2001 more too.
