Review of 2010 (1984) by Tiberio S — 10 Jul 2016
My problem with this film isn't that it's unlike or not on the level of Stanley Kubrick - I never expected that - it's that it intentionally seems to use all methods Kubrick wouldn't, resulting in some really bad effects and filmmaking quality.
What was Hyams trying to do with this? I think of when Scheider and the Russian woman have that tender moment when the shuttle is bouncing around Jupiter's orbit at a velocity which almost sets it ablaze.
What an awkward moment, and an opening to bud a logical romance between two people trapped in metal far from home for years at a time... nothing. Every bit of the story had potential to be a very good science fiction film, and because of that story I sort of enjoyed it.
But as a film it doesn't work on many levels, particularly the special fx. How embarrassed one must feel to followup 16 years later and have fx that appear 20 years or more behind, a true testament to how advanced and ahead of his time Kubrick was.
I have nightmares of John Lithgow floating in space, but I'm no doubt amused.
