Immediately forgive the early '80's special effects, especially in contrast to the magic Kubrick achieved with far less technology and 16 years before. Focus instead on the performances from a red hot Roy Scheider, a very young Helen Mirren and John Lithgow and character actor Bob Balaban (most recently seen in "Monuments Men"), combined with a wonderful script that emphasizes the stupidity and insignificance of the Cold War and politics in general when it comes to science and space exploration.

Especially charming moment - HAL & Dave reuniting. Also a lovely companion piece to 1997's "Contact"...
