Review of 2010 (1984) by Travis C — 13 Dec 2014
Once you are mentally past the point of comparing the movie with its predecessor, you can enjoy what is an undeniably capable follow-up. If you'd like to spend some more time with Haywood, HAL, Dave, or are just generally interested in what happens next, check this out.
It's amazing, though, how 16 years after the first film, the visuals seem so bland. Even shooting with the same sets, this director somewhat botches the visual style he could have achieved. It's unfair to compare anyone to Kubrick, but it all looks poorly lit, somewhat bland, and very 80s, despite two decades of technological advancements in filmmaking since Kubrick's masterpiece.
The optics are inferior, nothing is as sharp. The story earns its tense moments, but overall you're not exactly sure if it amounted to anything. Even so, as an amalgamation of moments and revisiting old friends, it's a must-see.
