Review of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) by Dave W — 29 Nov 2014
Stanley Kubrick's classic sci-fi epic is ambitious, thought-provoking, awe-inspiring, mind-blowing, confusing and amazing all at once. Its plot deals with nothing less than the evoution of mankind from ape to man to a higher form of intelligence, and finally gave the science-fiction genre a good name.
Boasting ground-breaking photography and SFX that make the universe a thing of outstanding beauty, it also proved what cinema was capable of when pushing boundaries. There's precious little characterisation, but that's partly the point: this is pure cinema, defying conventional narrative structures, a film to contemplate and absorb.
You may not understand it, or even enjoy it, but you'll agree there is nothing else quite like it.
