Review of Chéri (2009) by Deana L — 24 Jul 2009
Beautiful movie to look at, I love period dramas. This one had fantastic costumes and scenery, with so much attention to detail. It takes a look at these very well compensated courtesans, and their children.
Pfeiffer and Bates, who are retired from the profession, hang out and exchange barbs with each other while they look incredible in their mansions. Then Bates hands over her unloved 19 year old son to be taught a thing or two.
Although it's grossly inappropriate, they fall in love and almost have a long life together, but Bates has other plans. It's soap-operaish but in a good way. It's bluntly sad and doesn't really end up exactly like I expected it would.
This movie was a nice reprieve from the gross comedies and mindless action flicks of the summer.
