Review of Sugar (2010) by Deana L — 26 Apr 2009
This is no ordinary "sports movie"--there are no cliches and it does not end with a three men on-two outs-full count climax--it is unpredictable. It gives a fascinating perspective on the immigrant experience.
Using baseball more as a backdrop, it feels akin to "Hoop Dreams." The lead actor (Algenis Perez Soto) is completely realistic in the role, and so sympathetic and moving. Like Ryan Gosling in "Half Nelson," he conveys with his expressions his isolation and confused emotions.
I found myself profoundly sad afterwards.
