Review of Zardoz (1974) by Glen W — 13 Jan 2008
Whew. I don't really have much to say about this, except how much fun it is to consider the film's place in history - the absurd attempt to capture the fervor created by 2001, and the director's own commentary on the DVD that (as he states repeatedly) they really REALLY tried to say too much with too little budget. It's amazing that the sci-fi genre survived long enough to produce Star Wars just a few years later.
I can only hope that one day Richard Kelly reaches the same contrite conclusion about Southland Tales, which suffers badly in comparison to this film. At least Zardoz has 70's retro kitsch and a comparatively simple storyline going for it. The trailer alone is an absolute riot.
