Review of You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010) by Bert R — 11 Dec 2010
Woody Allen's still got it. This movie focuses on the love lives of four people: an older husband and wife who just split apart after 40 years of marriage (Gemma Jones and Anthony Hopkins), their daughter (Naomi Watts) and her husband (Josh Brolin).
Now I am nowhere near familiar with Woody Allen's complete library, but I have now seen the last three movies he has released, and I've enjoyed them all, this one included. With You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, he has put together a very strong ensemble cast to tell these downward spiral romantic stories; yes, these are all romances that are on their decline, but everybody completely deserves what they end up getting.
I love the way Allen creates these characters with motivations of the heart, they all seem very real and believable. It moves at a good clip, and is sometimes laugh out loud funny, but it is more of a dramedy than a straight up comedy.
There is something about it that just makes me enthralled to watch these characters in this slightly sticky scenario and how it plays out. Out of Woody's last three movies, this is probably the lesser, as there is something about it that feels a bit less substantial, but it is still a quality film and a good watch.
