Review of Rosetta (1999) by Bert R — 24 Aug 2009
Neo-neo-realist Dardennes Brothers transfix viewers with the stubbornly unlikable Rosetta; but this is what neorealism has always been about: somehow art-house-ifying that phrase "you gotta do what you gotta do.
" Here, it's actually pulled off--I can't explain how either; must be the born-loser acting or the stone ruthlessness of the ending. In a genre where every film more or less gets to the same bottom line, the Dardennes seem to do it best (that is, make it look the worst).
It's a hard fucking knock life, alright.
