Review of Yes (2010) by Kareem Y — 27 Oct 2008
What to say about this film,.
So concerned with love, loss, and morality.
Well firstly,.
It attempts to discuss such issues by removing itself from reality.
Queue lingering shots, uncomfortable pauses,.
And cameras that struggle to main maintain focus.
This is art you see, not just a movie.
Maintaining artistic merit is its purpose.
My god, the dialogue.
Composed with rhythm to rhyme.
Yes all the dialogue to rhyme,.
To rhyme, to rhyme all of the time.
This in itself,.
Would be enough to really grate and annoy.
But it is the condescending, ham-fisted imitations of real conversations,.
That rob this film of any joy.
Oh now itâ??s the actors.
To which I would like to first take a swipe.
I bet you thought this was something meaty and challenging.
But really itâ??s utter shite.
Was it the pointless monologues,.
Did they remind you of your heady days at drama school?
Where they talked about acting as a craft.
Your not a craftsman, your just a tool.
And now to Sally Potter.
It is this painful film you did direct.
For all your good intentions,.
It was condescension I did detect.
I may not be smart, but Iâ??m not dumb,.
I can figure that 1 + 2= 3.
So why blatantly spell out every single meaning and emotion,.
This movie was subtly free.
(Ok I get he was a surgeon, now a cook. Both there tools are knives. He is the cook to hang with the dishies because A) The other cooks a stand-offish because he is Middle Eastern and B) He does not condescend to the dishies because he is a good man who has been through a lot of hardship that has taught him that all men are equal blah blah blah, why not just belt me over the head continually with it till I agree that western society is fuelled by prejudice.).
And beware casual moviegoer,.
Of the promise of eroticism printed on the cover in bold font.
â??That sceneâ?? is pretty disappointing.
Just a middle aged women getting fingered in a restaurant.
Ultimately this was a movie,.
About people for which I did not give a FAAARRKKKK!
A note to you Sam Neil,.
You looked like you were having more fun in Jurassic Park.
