Review of Cairo Time (2009) by Kareem Y — 04 Sep 2010
It's hard to hate what is essentially a collection of video postcards showcasing the noisy and colourful Cairo metropolis, but I was still extremely disappointed. Clarkson does her best with her so-called character, but her dialogue with Siddig is so stilted and poorly written I fail to understand what Nadda was trying accomplish with this film.
There is little development between the two characters that actually matters, and while I'm all for films about longing and regret, I just didn't see a connection between the two. All I saw was Nadda's idea of what kind of stupid questions a white American woman would ask in Cairo, and Siddig recycling tired post-Orientalism complaints (like the origins of the term "Middle East") in a fashion that was completely out of character for what was supposed to be a seasoned UN employee.
