Review of Y Tu Mamá También (2001) by Skyler W — 08 Sep 2008
I regard Y tu mamá también as a perfect film. The story may be simple, but the bond between to two boys, Tenoch and Julio is emotionally wrenching. This film is the perfect example of Cine español. Y tu mamá también is all about life, and how amazing it can be at one spectrum, how passionate it can be in the middle, and how unforgiving it can be at the other end of the spectrum.
The narration that accompanies the film reminds the audience of the reality of life. There is an underlying homosexual tone to the film, and this may bother some, especially the last scene on the beach.
Honestly I did not even regard the boys as being homosexual the first time I watched it, and I still would say the the boys are straight and wouldn't even settle on calling the bisexual. For someone who hasn't seen the film, the last statement may be confusing, but I assure you that you will know what I speak of once you watch the film for yourself.
Gael García Bernal again is amazing, and of course Alfonso Curon's direction is perfect. All in all this film is perfect. From the dialogue to the camera angles to the raw, no hold back sexuality.
This film may be very shocking to some, with it's sexuality, but that is a staple of Cine español, however if you are watching a foreign film then one must exspect something different and shocking.
I said it before and I'll say it again, this film is perfect and honestly makes me cry every time I watch it.
