Review of Y Tu Mamá También (2001) by Hung-Ya L — 14 Aug 2016
A couple of teenage boys invite an older woman on a trip to a secret beach they claim to know about, and are totally unprepared when she unexpectedly accepts the offer. We know that she's accepted their offer because she found out her husband is cheating on her, but there seems to be more going on.
A joyous, ribald road movie with quite a bit of explicit dialogue and a bit of explicit sex disguises a film with a bit more on its mind. Ana seems to be challenging the two boys to grow up a bit and be more honest with each other, and to kind of earn the right to be with her.
Even that doesn't quite work out as too much honestly threatens to destroy their friendship. This is the kind of film that I don't think can be made within the confines of the MPAA rating system.
