Review of Wristcutters: A Love Story (2007) by Paul P — 17 Dec 2011
It's definitely got a solid, daring premise, and the director makes sure the universal somber mood is established early and carried constantly throughout the film, but overall I think the movie suffers from its utter blandness from the actors.
Admittedly, I am falling into the director's trap by saying this, as the whole premise of the film is that they cannot show emotion outside of the somber, nimwitted tone all the characters carry throughout, but I do believe the movie loses a bit of its power.
That being said, I do believe the director himself did a fantastic job putting this thing together, as the low-budget indie film is destined to become a cult classic. It mixes humor with seriousness very well.
The ending leaves a bit to be desired (The "Oz ending" scenario is definitely a bit played out), but overall I give credit to the director for getting his actors in line for a movie that's solid down the line.
