Review of Wristcutters: A Love Story (2007) by Jess L — 06 Feb 2013
This is certainly an interesting premise for a movie; what happens to people after they commit suicide - they simply keep living in what can only be described as an alternate universe that resembles Earth but exists in a depressing blue hue. It is in this world that they are supposedly meant to find what it was they couldn't in their previous lives.
Enter the protagonist who soon discovers his ex girlfriend has also "offed herself" as they continually put it, and so his search begins to find her again. It is on this journey that he falls in love with one of his travel companions and his lesson is somehow learnt.
It's a tidy movie, if it can be described that way. Everything fits neatly, especially the ending, which I felt some screenwriter must have felt extremely proud of after having finished writing it. It is simply too neat and too unrealistic but if you're a sucker for a happy ending, like myself, then you should be satisfied with how these character's stories end.
At 1.5 hours this movie works well and is enjoyable but I think it will be classed amongst many as a film that slips between the cracks.
