Review of Wordplay (2006) by Cydni G — 23 Jul 2006
After the movie Spellbound and the book "Word Freak," I wasn't sure I needed another true-to-life depiction of word competitions. Spellbound was funny because it included hilarious scenes of plainly imbalanced competitors.
"Wordplay" didn't make fun of its competitors (it could have). The coverage of the crossword puzzle tournament in the movie is mildly suspenseful, and there was some interesting (but unsurprising) coverage of the fact that many people, even famous people, do crossword puzzles.
You know there are a lot of disgruntled spouses and parents out there who are itching to bitch about losing their loved ones to a crossword cult, dying to rant about how Herman did a crossword puzzle on his honeymoon night.
Where was that stuff? Anyway, you'll probably be glad you saw this movie because it conveys some interesting facts -- but it could have done it better, that's all.
