Review of Wordplay (2006) by Allison D — 20 Sep 2011
Other than a bit dry, a nice documentary about NY Times crossword puzzle nets and tournament players. I think I originally wanted to see it because Jon Stewart is one of the doers in the movie, though admittedly, I added it long ago and was disappointed when I saw it was finally coming (meaning I was out of feature-type films).
Maybe the coolest thing about the movie is the big tournament in Connecticut (I think). If you've ever done something once a year, be it a workshop or a family reunion, you know the scene. A lot of people compete in the tournament, so it's pretty cool that they all plan and do this each year. And as the one lady says, sad that not everyone makes it back, etc. It's just like any other annual get together. What better way to mark personal progress?
Film-wise, it's just a little too dry. I really have no interest in the actual puzzles minus maybe the way they are created. The interviews are not all that great, even Stewart's. And it's not like it has scenes that are just going to grab you. It's a movie about friggin crossword puzzles.
