In some ways, this movie almost could be the Swedish "It's a wonderful life," or perhaps the opposite of it. But what it does share in common in this type of movie is a story of a man who realizes who he is, where he's come from, and where he should go.

In some ways, I find this tale and its telling so refreshing, maybe more so than the Capra movie, because I find the latter a bit on the cloyingly sweet side, despite it's classic appeal. Not that I don't like "It's a wonderful life," but I find the verismo aspect of the Bergman piece more appealing.

The characters as portrayed by Sjostrom, Andersson, Thulin, among others, provide a bas relief look at one man's experience in this most Scandinavian telling. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an appealing title on a human drama.
