Review of Wild (2014) by Irene S — 12 May 2015
BRAVO to the cast and crew of WILD, a terrific motion picture that offers beautiful landscapes and images along the Pacific Crest Trail. It was filmed with the support of park rangers and with permits on location.
Inspired by true events, WILD takes place during the mid-1990's where a young woman named Cheryl Strayed decides to undertake this journey after experiencing major losses in her life. With an abusive and alcoholic father yet a caring mother who taught Cheryl the power of positive thinking and earning an education, our young protagonist takes the ultimate challenge of redemption, survival, and recovering her soul.
Solid performance by Witherspoon and the rest of the cast and the director of course. Prior to the hike, Cheryl is not someone that many viewers may feel sympathy for; actually I felt disdain for her and no desire to meet her.
During the hike we see a transformation and as another female hiker, I commend her for her aplomb, determination and never quit attitude. Her mind initially kept telling her to quit, but her heart said otherwise and I am glad she went on this spiritual journey, thankfully prepared.
Along the trail there are various outposts where friends and family can send you care packages and they give you time to rest, take a shower and a warm meal. Would I do this hike now alone? NO. I would only do portions and I would take a companion, most definitely.
Cheryl completes about 1100 miles of the over 2000 mile journey, captured on film and at the end photos of the real Cheryl on the trail are shown. Highly recommended and for adventure seekers out there, especially women, a must see!!
