Review of What Doesn't Kill You (2014) by Adnan A — 07 May 2009
So I'm trapped in my room and I pop my dvd of "What Doesn't Kill You" in expecting a crime-drama that will leave me engaged and help me not focus on what's going on.
I was sorely disappointed.
Most of the characters felt borrowed from other movies, and the whole thing felt like a Mark Ruffalo Vanity project.
Now, I love Mark Ruffalo, I've been a fan of his since "ride with the Devil". But really, it felt like the whole movie revolved around his character and over-developed it in the midst of under-developed characters. It felt like too much of a good thing.
I was also really upset with some really choppy plot elements, it felt like an episode of Lost done poorly, finally leading up to an extremely dis-satsifying ending.
There was a lot to like though, and the Amanda Peet/Mark Ruffalo relationship was an incredible character study in a woman in love with a troubled man.
Overall, I think this is a movie worth seeing once. Don't go out and buy it.
I still love Ruffalo though, can't wait for Ashecliffe!
