Review of Hereditary (2018) by Adnan A — 14 Jun 2018
If you are tantalized by reviews that call this movie a "slow burn" or a "thinker" (maybe, like me, you are a fan of psychological horror)- you are LIKELY going to be very disappointed by this film. A slow burn implies a build-up of suspenseful elements to a satisfying conclusion; you will NOT get that with this movie. Many ending-related details are telegraphed to the audience at the early start of the film - if you are paying attention, the ending will not surprise you, and will probably even disappoint you for expecting some additional twist. I personally feel that I wasted my money on a ticket, having bought into the praise of pretentious movie viewers for whom this is probably babby's first family-drama horror film.
Two stars only for the well-designed miniatures that feature in the film.
To anyone on the fence, a mild spoiler below as to the nature of the big bad threat in this movie:
If you are a fan of LITERAL supernatural threats, you may enjoy this movie. Though this film has psychological elements, they are loose ends that remain pretty much unaddressed throughout the film.
