Review of We Are What We Are (2010) by James . — 27 Mar 2011
Beautifully shot and very understated, the film possesses a quiet terror throughout, not unlike 'Let the right one in'. It feels more like a character drama with a chilling undertone than an outrgiht horror which I think allows it to avoid it being cheap and cliched.
The film can be interpretted as a social commentary of a decadent society that feeds off each other in order to survive but even without this additional layer the characters are strong enough to make the story engaging and atmospheric.
4 stars.
