Review of We Are What We Are (2010) by Kevin T — 13 Feb 2012
A darkly comic allegory of Mexico's social and political ills... all wrapped up in a story about a family of cannibals. The story begins with the death of the hunter gatherer father, leaving a wife, two sons and a daughter to fend for themselves. Which one will step forward and take their father's place to put food on the table?
The dire poverty of Mexicoâ(TM)s urbanism is captured with cinematography to die for; dizzying, hypnotic and strangely beautiful. The initial comedy of errors (as the family strive to â~captureâ(TM) their next meal) quickly rises to a witty and captivating orgy of violence that will leave you exasperated.
