Review of We Are What We Are (2010) by Vuk S — 26 Oct 2013
Now that a remake was made I just had to see this flick. I've been aware of it for quite some time, and I've always felt curious about the plot concerning a cannibalistic family. Unfortunately, finally watching it, I lacked the amusement I've been looking forward to for years.
This movie is really slow-paced, dark and humorless. You'd expect a movie concerning a cannibalistic family to be really brutal and gory, yet this wasn't the case. The plot and characters were badly written, nor is there any given background behind their motives, so you never feel attached enough to even care about what happens on screen. Most of the plot elements, even the potential homosexuality of the main character, never fully unfolded, so the movie ends leaving a lot of questions unanswered.
Finally the movie ends with a sort-of twist which is "supposed to" be creepy, or have some meaning, but nonetheless you are left craving for explanations. I truly feel this was a poor execution of a good concept, and I really don't recommend it. I will eventually check out the remake, though.
