Review of W.E. (2011) by James C — 09 Dec 2011
Madonna's second directorial effort looks great (wonderful costumes & production design & photography) and has a good cast but goes on a bit too long and could have done with a rewrite to polish this idea of a woman in 1998 and her obsession with Wallis Simpson and her relationship with King Edward VIII.
The compare & contrast is sometimes too literal and the meshing of the two time periods does come off a bit gimmicky. A wonderful score from Abel Korzeniowski (being asked to basically recreate some of his music from "A Single Man") is put at odds with Madonna's attempt to do a Sofia Coppola and use contemporary songs in a period setting.
Hearing Henry Mancini Lounge music or the Sex Pistols during 1930s party scenes really comes off jarring.
