Review of W. (2008) by John C — 22 Jan 2011
I wasn't able to get more than 40 minutes into the movie. While Josh Brolin was doing an admirable job acting, nothing else about this movie held my interest or made me want to pursue seeing more of it. The movie itself, to that point, didn't seem to know what it wanted to be-- was it a skewering of a right-wing president by a left-wing filmmaker? Was it trying to paint these people in a particular light?
It was particularly jarring to be anonymously and suddenly thrust forward and backward in time -- especially because Josh Brolin looked the same age (plus or minus some hair coloring) in every scene. Just tell the story; relying on gadgetry like forward and flashbacks lessons the impact of your message, and leads to the confusion I mentioned before.
Like most of Oliver Stone's work, it was a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Stone is only a marginally better thought-of Michael Moore.
