Review of Vexille (2007) by Daniel G — 15 Apr 2011
I saw this at the London Film Festival 2007. It seems that the lesson learned with "Final Fantasy:The spirits within" has given birth to a new batch of Japanese 3D films (Appleseed) on a reasonable budget which can keep production companies afloat.
This one keeps pushing the envelope in character realism although not in terms of facial features (FF was more careful at that than this one years ago...). The production is nicely stylized and the plot is brought to the minimum expression unlike other Japanese ventures dealing with similar apocalyptic material.
It goes surprisingly emotionally deep in some sequences and the Dune-like sequence at the dessert with the metal worms is amazing. It also shows the state Japan is going through at the moment. Isolating itself from the International community more and more because of its self-assurance and arrogant superiority complex.
..Watching this at the cinema will make the whole difference.
