Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Private U — 16 Jul 2007
Vera Drake is a remarkable character, who helps young women get abortions in a time and place where abortions were illegal. THis story set in a distant time and place lacks any sort of grab. The entire movie is dreary and there are a few mundane household interactions, including some dismal chemistry between two young adults.
This story is completely uninteresting despite one scene where Vera uses primitive tools to give a young woman an abortion. Also, the British accents are very thick and difficult to understand. One may find it easier to watch this movie with subtitles on.
Overall while this movie had SOME good acting and a very sad ending, it wasn't great-- just a drab depiction of some selfless old criminal.
