Review of Van Diemen's Land (2009) by Glenn C — 26 Apr 2012
Van Diemen's Land is a beautiful and uncompromising film about the infamous story of Alexander Pearce. As Aussies we are taught all about colonial history and settlement. Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) plays a large role in that history, but the tale of Alexander Pearce is always left out.
The film portrays his story in a realistic and sensible way. The landscape itself is the central character with a haunting score helping to tell the story. Its a grisly story of cannibalism. Its a violent tale of survival.
Its a chapter in history which has given itself to folklore but unlike Ned Kelly, its escaped commercial retelling. This film is magnificent.
