Review of Vagabond (1992) by Tor M — 17 Jul 2018
Mona, a young drifter is found dead in a ditch. That's where it all starts. Through flashbacks and interviews with the people she met her last couple of months is how her faith is presented.
She comes of as a edgy person. No "thank you's" or "please" and she seem to be way too lazy for a drifter in need of money. She hooks up with a bunch of nice, off-beat people. Some let her down, but mostly she let them down. She is not ment to keep jobs, deals or friends so she often does what she does best. She leaves. I never found Mona a mean person. She had great qualities too and a nice life philosophy. A bit rude maybe, but never mean. Mona experienced a lot of vivid weird things during her last months. At times it looks like she has given up, other moments seem filled with joy or hope. Like a real struggle in very unusual settings. She is acted out brilliantly by Sandrine Bonnaire and she won several prizes for this part back in the day.
Possibly Agnès Varda's most famous film - yesterday she was nominated as the oldest person at the Oscars with her 89 years by the way. I guess I should se more of her films as this sure was a good one. The kind of film that will stick with you without the biggest scenes and a slow pace. Gritty but simple, thought provoking film film that's also very depressing really - but only if you want it to be.
8 out of 10 tulip people.
