Review of Up the Yangtze (2007) by Derek B — 03 May 2008
A beautiful and personal story of how the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydro electric project, is affecting people in the region. Looking at both the plight of one family of close to 3 million people who will be displaced by the project as well as the economic opportunities for many that have resulted.
It is shocking to see the contrast between the mud hut that houses one family and the modern metropolis that has sprung up on the banks of the Yangtze. Western tourists on a luxury river cruiser provide some comic relief.
Looking forward to more from Yung Chang.
