Review of Up the Yangtze (2007) by Arti D — 31 May 2010
Documentary Up The Yangtze captures the gargantuan dam project at Three Gorges through microoptics, focusing on it's effects in relation to the rural Chinese countryside and it's poor population.
With a firm grip on the drama involved and in arrestingly beautiful visual fashion, Yung Chang compares China's development to the constant movement of a cruise ship, taking wealthy Westerners up the river.
The director's own annotations through sparsely used voiceover make a respectful and suitable accompaniment to the main story.
