Review of The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2006) by Andrew G — 21 Jan 2008
Johnston is an American original, but his eccentricities and seeming absence of guile outstage his music.
This documentary does nothing to illuminate Johnston's creative process or motivations--on this latter, it is particularly opaque.
What is significant about Johnston's work? Is he, as one interviewee implausibly claims, a real rival to Brian Wilson in the pop genre? Is Johnston a novelty act or is he somehow something more? If there are answers, I don't know them for having seen this film.
