Review of Under the Volcano (1984) by Joseph K — 01 Jan 2008
This was a good movie by any standards, but what really stands out is Finney's performance as Geoffrey Firmin. I'm not sure if he was actually drunk the whole time, but he pulled off playing an alcoholic better than I've ever seen.
The movie was terribly depressing, but anyone going in should know this already. As a huge plus, the Criterion version has the National Film Board documentary "Vocano: An Inquiry into the Death of Michael Lowry", which is very well done.
