Review of Un Chien Andalou (1929) by Shelly — 26 Nov 2009
I love surrealism as much as the next guy, but I have yet to see a non-narrative film that works as well as a narrative one. There is some wonderful imagery in the film, but it's just an experiment.
It's just detached imagery floating without connection. If the point of the film is to get a reaction, then it is lacking. It is difficult to feel anything without a frame of reference for what is going on and who is perpetrating acts.
Scenes of surrealism inside a narrative piece are much more impacting than surrealist images existing without the structure of a narrative to reside in. Still, Un Chien Andalou is what it is. And what it is is important.
