Review of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) by Zoran S — 11 Feb 2010
Especially on repeat viewings, and divorced from comparisons to the series, Fire Walk With Me emerges as one of Lynch's better and more disturbing films. Like Eraserhead, it's almost horrifically bleak and hopeless until its cosmic redemptive ending.
In its bursting apart of narrative coherence (the prologue, or David Bowie's cameo) it also foretells the complexity of Lynch's recent work. In a way, though, it's a much sadder and emotionally engaging film than Lost Highway or INDLAND EMPIRE.
Watching the beautiful Laura Palmer's body and soul being torn apart by abuse and drugs is Lynch at his most melancholy.
