You would think only fans of the TV series but this could work as stand alone movie as it is totally different to the series apart form characters and setting. Having said that it much more enjoyable as the horrifying prequel to the classic 90s show.
If you want to enjoy the series (which anyone should) dont watch this first, watch it after. other wise great surreal horror movie!
