Review of Tsotsi (2005) by Peggy V — 19 Feb 2009
It never fails to suprise me how much more affecting, thought provoking and shocking world cinema often is when compared with McMovies produced in the US of A.
This film is full of issues that most of us don't have to ever even think about, let alone deal with. When confronted with the issues of the AIDS pandemic, the orphans that result from it, domestic abuse, addiction, gang culture, and extreme poverty I found myself feeling so grateful to live where I do. What I have seen as misfortunes in my life are so insignificant compared to what so many people are suffering on a daily basis. These people are just doing what they can to survive, the only way they know how.
This kind of cinema is so important, people who constantly complain about their safe, uninfected, hunger free, gun free lives should be made to watch this and City of God on a loop until they shut the fuck up whinging!
Fantastic, moving and humbling.
