Review of Torn Curtain (1966) by Adam T — 09 Aug 2008
I generally prefer the "examination of obsessive psychological perversions" Hitchcock to the more typical "master of suspense," and so "Torn Curtain" was somewhat disappointing, altbeit undoubtedly entertaining.
Although there is one particularly brilliant murder scene, Hitchcock plays it remarkably straight here, refraining from the experimentation and defiance of audience expectations that defines his greatest works.
Still, low-level Hitchcock is still prime cinema, and has there ever been an actor better at playing "cool" characters than Paul Newman? Because I can't think of one.
