Review of Topsy-Turvy (1999) by Oscar N — 03 Feb 2010
A cross between backstage drama and a filmed version of 'The Mikado', Mike Leigh's "Topsy-Turvy" can be a bit of a chore to sit through for the non-operaphile (and trust me, there is A LOT of concomitant opera here).
But on balance the strengths - a great performance by Jim Broadbent, an obvious visual flair, a euphemistic script that makes decoding the characters' manners and motives a fun ongoing puzzle - outweigh the weaknesses.
