Review of Topsy-Turvy (1999) by Daniel K — 18 May 2011
3: The only real issue I had with the picture is that I'm not a huge Gilbert & Sullivan fan. Now, if it were about Cole Porter, Bernstein, Gershwin, Morricone, Glass, George M. Cohan, Comden and Green, etc that would be a different story.
However, many of these individuals have already had one of more classic films made about their lives, so this is a nice change of pace. It is flawlessly designed, costumed, decorated, etc. It's a lush period piece in style of a bygone era.
Solid performances, casting, script, music, editing, etc, but nothing that made me become terribly emotionally attached to the story or the characters. It's a bit too light hearted and frivolous for my tastes.
Still, there is no denying the quality of the filmmaking.
