Review of Top Hat (1935) by Jay K — 20 May 2011
An early musical that has Astaire in top form as always and Edward Everett Horton, Blore and Broderick all giving great comedic performances. It seems that Rogers is not quite as active in all this but it could just be the story.
The plot centers around a case of mistaken identity (which if you go into this not knowing that like I did you expect a short little mistaken identity gag and then to move on only to wait forever.) The plot pushes itself as far as possible and just when it seems that it can't keep identities mixed much longer the climax finally comes.
Fun but lacks some of the charm and stronger plot that something like Swing Time has.
