Review of Top Hat (1935) by Ken T — 07 Dec 2011
Top Hat is perhaps the very best of the Rogers-Astaire pairings. Astaire is Jerry Travers, a dancer in a show who falls in love at first sight with a model he has accidentally annoyed with his tap dancing.
The woman is Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers). The usual romantic comedy storyline is here with the couple falling in love, a misunderstanding and then reconciliation, but rarely is it portrayed so effectively.
Director Sandrich knew that the art portrayed on screen was the dancing and just to have the camera capture their artistry in minimal takes is spectacular. And the dancing is some of the best to be seen on film.
The script is great - especially the numerous very funny sexual innuendos heard throughout. Then add some memorable supporting players, tremendous art deco sets and wonderful costumes and this is one of Hollywood's all time great films.
