Review of Tokyo Gore Police (2008) by Devlin K — 11 Aug 2009
When I had seen the front cover (above image) for the movie, Eihi Shiina was the main catalyst for my desire to see the movie.. I bought it without any qualms (i have like a 90% success rate for picking out movies I will like even before seeing previews) The movie is RAW, low budget, not even trying, amazing...
When you go into the movie you have to have an open mind, the movie was made for entertainment purpose only, but the Japanese are great when it comes to story telling so the story behind Ruka was intertwined well in the story.
The movie is gore filled, and most of the things and ideas in the movie are what some may not understand, but its the occult culture of japan portrayed into an almost 2 hour movie. They didnt make it to be realistic, I think the arterial blood spray that can create thrust enough to propel a man through the air is evidence in that.
To compare TGP to any other movie of its kind is giving it a short end. The japanese portray so well how creative they can be, even if its similar to movies like "Stacy" or "Machine Girl" it is still one of a kind.
It also takes a play on how society in japan with the constant commercials about wrist cutting being socially acceptable and others against suicide and not to mention the Privatized Police support commercials. The best is the Wii commercial encouraging victim's families to exercise revenge on the perpetrator.
It shows how things really are corrupt, and how its a slow and steady decline even there in japan.
The movie has a lot more to offer than just the arterial blood spray and the monstrous gore and horrible special effects. So keep that in mind when you watch the movie instead of taking it at face value.
