Review of Tokyo Gore Police (2008) by Juri K — 28 Oct 2011
Stylish slice (and dice) of Japanese mayhem, like a deranged mash-up of Robocop and Cronenberg, with an unwavering commitment to constantly raising the WTF stakes. (âThat guy ripping the top of his own head off and firing bio-bullets from his gun-barrel eye-sockets is OK, but what can we do to really up the ante?â?).
However, the relentless splatter is anchored by the melancholy seriousness of Eihi Shiinaâ(TM)s lead who never betrays the slightest suspicion that whatâ(TM)s going on around her is quite spectacularly ridiculous.
It doesnâ(TM)t quite sustain its bloody magic to the end â" 20 minutes or so less and itâ(TM)d have been a masterpiece of sorts - but even as it is, itâ(TM)s a pretty compelling watch (so long as you have a decent tolerance for outrà (C) violence.
