Review of Tobacco Road (1941) by Eric R — 06 Dec 2010
A film that follows a group of poor southern farmers whom see their way of life threatened, when the local bank informs them that it plans to take over their land. This is a "comedy" by John Ford, but I cant say I honestly was that amused throughout.
Ford spends a lot of time introducing us to this group of hillbillies and letting us try and understand/grasp there way of life. Charley Grapewin does a great job as the goofy Jeeter Lester. Ford's direction is solid though not his best, with a great opening scene and some nice black and white cinematography.
I think the problem for me was that I just never really cared that much about these characters.
