Review of Tobacco Road (1941) by Adam Z — 31 Aug 2007
A quite enchanting and often funny film about a family of dirt farmers in Georgia during the great depression. OK, so fundamentally we are presented with a group of stereotypical hillbillies and the film comes across as farcical during some sections, but amazingly there are several effective moments of pathos amongst them.
Can't compare it to the novel or stage play, neither of which I have much knowledge of, but my understanding is that both contain a lot more satire than the movie; however, the film is fine as it is: a light hearted entertainment and a very enjoyable way to spend an hour and twenty.
