Review of Tideland (2005) by Nicholas N — 26 Jan 2011
MAY CONTAIN SOME SPOILERS.
Before the DVD starts, a message from director Terry Gilliam plays. He warns you that a lot of the viewers are not going to like this film. This warning makes one wonder what exactly is going to happen next.
The film is much like Pan's Labyrinth, not as violent but much more disturbing.
The film follows a young girl as she must learn to cope with her junkie parents. She turns to her imagination which is fueled by her reading Alice in Wonderland.
It's the kind of film that just when you are telling yourself how weird it all is, it just gets even weirder. I don't want to give any story elements away so I will just give the MPAA rating, which explains a lot. The film received an R-rating for the following reasons: for bizarre and disturbing content, including drug use, sexuality and gruesome situations - all involving a child, and for some language. The only thing I will add is there is a taxidermied/preserved Jeff Bridges.
I still do not know what to make of the film. I do know that I liked it though. The visual aspects of the film are great. It feels like a fairy-tale, just a dark twisted version.
