Review of Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) by Marnie B — 30 Jan 2007
Upon rewatching this funny Julie Andrews musical, I was surprised at how good it was; not that I didn't enjoy it the first time, but I don't think I really appreciated it. "Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a really smart and funny musical that features one of the most eclectic cast of characters and ludicrous stories of any musical. It revolves around a country girl trying to modernize and ends up with her foiling an evil scheme to kidnap young women and sell them into white slavery. Not your typical musical fare, to be sure.
Julie Andrews is absolutely gorgeous, and despite the somewhat small number of songs (a few of which are instantly forgettable), her voice is just as beautiful as ever. Carol Channing is aboslutely hilarious as Muzzy, hitting notes that would make a bass blush. The rest of the cast is good, too (including the ever-adorable Mary Tyler Moore).
Even if you're not a huge musical fan, you may enjoy this movie; there aren't many songs (less than ten) and the story is very funny-funny enough to enjoy this as a comedy with the occasional song thrown in for good measure.
